1st Lyran Regulars: The Beginning

The 1st Lyran Regulars was formed in America Online battletech out of the Winfield Brigade under General Unikon. Unikon was promoted to theater CO and as he turned the reigns over to Col Medic in WB, he asked Lt Col Dominator III to head up the 1LR with Lt Col Rhude as his XO. At the same time, the 30LG was formed with Lt Col Marlboro as CO and Lt Col Jasper as his XO. The Winfield Brigade was split even further as Cruncher, Pepper and Poltergeist were brought in as the first Company COs in 1st Battalion. Further dissemination of WB into the 1LR and 30LG resulted in Lancealot being sent to the 30LG, Streak, Kaveli & Macarus being sent to the 1LR as Company CO's as the 2nd and 3rd Battalions were activated. Macarus and Pepper were promoted to Regimental staff soon thereafter as Reg MO and TO. Col. Dominator spotted their leadership potential early on. H-K Cruncher was promoted to 1st Battalion CO as the original CO quit. Cruncher developed an easy working relationship with then Company XO, 1Lt. Streak. Streak was soon promoted to 1st Battalion XO and these two created one of the strongest battalions yet seen on Solaris, AOL version. The 2nd and 3rd battalions of the 1LR soon ceased to exist as their CO's were sloppy in their communication and all of theses battalions were disbanded because of no members. Col Dominator salvaged who he could from the failed battalions. Soon after the 2nd and 3rd were closed, Col Rhude left Steiner because he felt too much time was wasted in meetings. At the same time, General Unikon became disenchanted with Steiner High Command, he held meetings with 30LG, WB, 8AG and 1LR COs and XOs. Planning was done to leave Steiner in a week's time.

The final meeting between these influential leaders (Overseer had become Medic's XO in the WB) was on a Sunday night, with the final word being that another meeting was needed before Trellshire District seceded from Steiner.

The next day had Unikon meeting with various groups of these leaders at different times, he was agitated. The next day, Pepper and Dominator signed on and Unikon had seceded from Steiner without speaking with any of the Theater leaders. Unikon convinced Dominator and Pepper to change into his Mercenary uniforms and then Unikon signed off. Dominator and Pepper convened a meeting of all online 1LR and held a town forum. Only Dominator knowing how Unikon had changed the plan, no other Trellshire Theater leaders were expected on for another two days. Unikon planned on subverting each unit as a single entity. Due to Streak and Macarus's strong support to Dominator as leader of the 1LR and their undying loyalty to Steiner, Dominator recanted his earlier conversion. All of the 1LR stayed in Steiner as the first of the Trellshire units to turn aside Unikon's subversion attempts. Unikon was later re-instated as Trellshire CO at the request of some his loyal officers who wanted to continue with him as our leader and the units staying in Steiner. Unikon immediately assigned Mark Vain as Dominator's XO and this combination was not a workable one. Unikon also at every turn showed his contempt with the 1LR for foiling his attempt at tearing a full Theater out of Steiner. Dominator asked and received Mark Vain's transfer to another unit and Pepper was made his XO, a truly historical occassion for the 1LR as Col Pepper would lead the 1LR and then Trellshire through the difficult transition from AOL pay to play policies to GameStorm.

Gorr, Moku, Lady Reignstorm, Kliper, ACO, Bloodlust, Bancheeboy, Rails, Nicholas, Galareaneault (Galar) and Italy were recruited during the period of Unikon's return and subsequent dismissal. All of these talented pilots combined to make the 1LR at this time one of the most formidable units in Steiner and Solaris. Dominator was promoted to Lt General and XO of Trellshire under Marlboro after Count Strahd transferred to Rahne Front as General Rabideau's XO. Pepper assumed control of the 1LR and Macarus was promoted as his XO. Soon after, Dominator was forced, because of personal problems in RL, to retire.

The Death and Afterlife of the 1LR

The lst Lyran Regulars were one of the few units that struggled to continue through the AOL premium period. Losing most of it's players, only about a company of pilots remained playing a few hours a week. As weeks went by, numbers on Solaris slowly increased and the 1LR was growing. A decision was made to open more regiments and some of the 1LR veteran pilots took the controls. The 1LR lost some good pilots to new regiments and combined with the news of 3025 being cancelled, the 1LR slowly died out on AOL. The 1LR did attempt to make the switch to Gamestorm with most of Steiner, but that didn't last long as only a few pilots made the switch. The unit was placed inactive at the beginning / birth of Gamestorm and remained there until about 9-15-98.

On 9-12-98, with two regiments being down on their luck, a plan was made between Moku, the 8th Arcturan Guards Commanding officer and Gorr the Hansen's RoughRiders RXO, to combine their regiments to make them both stronger. Since neither unit wanted to accept the other regiment's name, on 9-15-98, the 8th Arcturan Guards and the remaining Hansen's RoughRiders pilots combined their forces and agreed to bring back one of Steiner's greatest units from AOL.

End of 1998: Is it the end?

The new 1LR started out strong and grew steadily. Unfortunately by mid-december, many of the new members had gone inactive and the Steiner HC was inactive. A war with Marik resulted with some veterans leaving the 1LR due to their own personal reasons and philosophical conflicts with Col. Moku. Col. Gorr sensing the deterioration of House Steiner and fruitless efforts of supporting a House for 2 years without any rewards or great achievements decided it was time to resign. Differences in lancing philosophy and practice issues with Col. Moku were also contributing factors. His goals were simply not met.

Col. Moku was also having his reservations about carrying on with his duties and hours of time he put in the game when the HL and HXO were never in the game showing any sort of interest. Fortunately the efforts of Trellshire Theatre to raise the issue of inactivity to the HL was halfway acknowledged through emails and the HL actually entering the game after several months. Most of the Steiner regiments had already been decimated.

Thanks to LtGenerals Fren Oberon and Drake. The Sim wars had been revived with Steiner hosting the first one on December 26 and 27. The positive results of the Sim War were due to the Steiners show of force and determination through merc units and ST Loyal groups. The continued support and attendance at practice by certain 1LR individuals along with the good results of the Sim War had persuaded Col. Moku to remain in Steiner as one of the few remaining Regimental Leaders. For a seemingly fruitless second half of 1998, the Sim War held the two days after Christmas Day was a joyous occasion. Steiner is still one of the Best.

Early 1999: A Steiner Resurgance

Steiner started the year off right with some great Succession Sim War performances. Rahne Front and HoS grew in numbers and had several lances. Skye front had the 30LG and mercs fighting while the Tamar front was paired with Tharkad. This was perhaps the best Steiner had ever been with more players on than ever before. We continued to play with our same numbers and fought well in the second season of the Solaris Lance League. The Steiner Regimental Lance Ladder webpage was developed by Gorr and run by Dark Aura. This event developed into a weekly event. It started off slow and later got more active with more lances practicing and learning open tactics. We did well the first few weeks but a lot of guys were busy and I was finishing up school. We continued with the SLL and made it to the playoffs. The Succession Sim Wars were halted which was unnecessary. Although the reason for it stopping was for the rules to be revised, the House Leaders did not get anything done. It turned out to be just for delaying it until the new hacker detection version of mpbt would be implemented. It may have also been halted for the announcement of the new 3025 version actually being produced. Finally Kesmai is developing the game everyone in mpbt has been waiting for.

June 1999: End of the Cycle

Col. Moku became relatively distraught and unhappy after HptGen. Drake was removed from his Tamar Front position after 1 1/2 years of service. Knowing all the hard work within Steiner could be pushed aside and easily forgotten he decided it was time to move on. Unlike his predecessors he will not continue to support House Steiner. Col. Moku resigned and Col. Ice replaced him. Determined that the current placement and district/front command structure for the 1LR was inadequate and nonexistant Col. Ice moved the remaining 1LR members to Skye Front under KomGen. Dark Aura. They re-united with two former 1LR members and combined under the 10th Skye Rangers. The cycle shall start again....
